There are currently around 12,800 Auckland homes without power after severe weather hit the region overnight.
Trees and other debris falling on power lines has resulted in the outage.
Power Company Vector has been working alongside Treescape throughout the night and will continue today to get power back up and running to affected homes.
Severe gale force winds hit a speed of 100 km/h with gusts reaching 110 km/h.
While Aucklanders faced a night of wild weather, Metservice says winds will likely ease in the region throughout the day.
Auckland Civil Defence Head of Emergency Operations Aaron Davis says, “There may still be minor travel disruption on the roads this morning.
While it’s been a wild lead-up to the holiday weekend, we expect the weather to settle down later today. Nevertheless, drivers should remain vigilant and take extra care on the roads."
A weather warning has been issued to many other areas of the country. Metservice says a strong northeasterly flow will bring heavy rain to northern parts of both islands today. Areas affected include Norhtland, Taranaki, the Coromandel Peninsula, Malborough, Nelson, Buller and Westland, where more than 200mm of rain is expected. This could cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly.
The Bay of Plenty region and Gisborne have also been issued with a severe weather warning until Friday morning.
Strong winds are expected in the north and west of the North Island with severe gale force winds reaching 120 km/h.
Drivers are being advised to drive with caution and avoid low-lying coastal roads.
