28th Māori Battalion Memorial C Company House to open in Gisborne

When the 28th Māori Battalion Memorial C Company House opens in Gisborne, it will be the only museum of its kind in the country.

The official opening is only a couple of weeks away, Te Kāea got a special look at some of its treasures.

Many precious family heirlooms have been gifted to the new memorial house.

Although the museum is dedicated to C Company, inside it will also house memories from all wars since New Zealand was first involved in the Boer War in 1899.

Getting to this point has been a true labour of love, community fundraising, donations from family members, land trusts and farming corporations, all helping to make this museum a reality.

Saturday 15 November is the official opening, a date that marks 100 years since 60 Māori volunteers departed for W.W.I.

An event that will be marked with a special re-enactment parade.
