A 50-year-old man was shot down on the highway between Paeroa and Ngatea by the police. With a gun in his possession, he fired upon police, the police returned gunfire, injuring the man.

It all started when the man and his partner had an argument last night and the front door window was smashed.

One of the neighbours says this wasn't the first time the couple have fought.

Residence from this street say the man is Pākehā and his partner is Māori.  A forensic team have arrived to the house to examine how intense the domestic was last night.

Despite the shooting last night, families from Kerepehi still believe that this is a safe town.

He is now in Waikato Hospital in a stable condition.
