9-year-old hopes to present handwritten letter to PM at Waitangi

Among the masses wanting to approach Prime Minister John Key at Te Tii Marae this morning will be 9-year-old Kate Ravet Diaz.

According to a media release issued by Tuariki Delamere, the young girl is hoping to present John Key with a handwritten letter asking the Prime Minister to allow her to stay in New Zealand with her family.

Mr Delamere says Kate is a New Zealand citizen but she is likely, to soon be deported to Chile because her parents are overstayers and have been here for 11 years.

According to a letter he also hopes to present to the Prime Minister, Delamere says, “As a former Minister of Immigration I am sympathetic to the need to curb the ability of overstayers to use the system to prevent their deportation from New Zealand.  However, cancelling some of the citizenship rights of children to enable that deportation is wrong."
