All Blacks win Supreme Halberg Award

The 2015 Rugby World Cup winners, The All Blacks are the winners of the Supreme Team of the Year Award at the 53rd Halberg Awards.

It's the third time the world champions have taken out the prestigious award, ahead of last year's supreme winners, rowers Hamish Bond and Eric Murray.

The Halberg Awards is New Zealand's distinguished event to honour and celebrate sporting excellence.

Golfer Lydia Ko claimed the High Performance Sport New Zealand Sportswoman of the Year for the third consecutive time. Ko won five LPGA tournaments and finished 2015 ranked number one in the world.

Other finalists in this category included Olympic gold medalist, Lisa Carrington, swimmer Lauren Boyle and cyclist Linda Villumsen.

Black Cap Kane Williamson was named High Performance Sport New Zealand Sportsman of the Year. Williamson became the number one ranked Test batsman in the world last year. He had an impressive year which including five test centuries and three ODI Centuries.

Golfer Danny Lee, All Black Dan Cater and IndyCar driver Scott Dixon were also finalists in this category.

After winning three golds, a silver and two bronze medals at the IPC Swimming World Championships, Sophie Pasco took out the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation Disabled Sportsperson of the Year Award ahead of para-skiier Corey Peters, para-shooter Michael Johnson and fellow para-swimmer Nikita Howarth.

Steve Hansen was named Coach of the Year after steering the All Blacks to the Rugby World Cup Championship win. Hansen was up against Gordon Walker (Lisa Carrington), Hamish Wilcox (Men’s 49er crew) and Mike Hesson (BLACKCAPS).

Pole vaulter Eliza McCartney, who broke a world junior record in December, won the SKY NEXT Emerging Talent award and a $10,000 sporting scholarship.

Black Caps player Grant Elliott was named the Radio Sport Sporting Moment of the year winner.  Fellow cricketer, Brendon McCullum was presented the Sport New Zealand Leadership Award.

Several sportspeople were inducted in to the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame. They are Lance O'Sullivan (Horseracing), Sir Don Rowlands (Rowing), Lesley Rumball (Netball) and Mark Sorenson (Softball).
