Aspiring AKL basketball player shaken by American college shootings

An aspiring Auckland basketball player has witnessed the terrifying Oregon Community College shootings in America. Te Kāea understands his mother is preparing to fly out to be with him.

Pursuing a dream to play college basketball in America has turned into a nightmare for Jaylen Gerrand.  Ten people are confirmed dead and seven injured by a lone male shooter this morning. The incident occurred at Umpqua Community College, Roseburg, in the Oregon State of America.

Supercity Rangers Basketball Coach Jeff Green helped place Gerrand at the college, where he arrived just three weeks ago. Two others including Green's son, were set to join Gerrand in the US next week.

Jaylen's mother Monette didn't want to talk to media today. But it's understood she will decide whether to keep her son in the US once she is with him.
