Auckland to host 2015 Finn Gold Cup

Auckland will host 29 nations in the biggest sailing event of the year for the senior fleet.

The 2015 Finn Gold Cup will be held this weekend from November 21-29 as it celebrates its 60th anniversary.  For many, this event is crucial in the lead-up to the Rio Olympics next year.

The NZ Men's Finn singles Josh Junior and Andrew Murdoch tested the waters today in Takapuna ahead of their big showdown on Saturday.

"Outside of the Olympics this is the biggest event each year and it's nice for a change that everyone comes to New Zealand,” Murdoch says.

It’s been 35 years since New Zealand has seen the world's best sailors competing for one of world's toughest trophies in New Zealand waters.

Yachting NZ High Performance Director, Jez Fanstone says, "The finn fleet in New Zealand is in great shape and it's got a great history. If you think about the people who have medalled before and gone on to great things since then."

The nine-day event will see 86 competitors compete in its 60th anniversary.
