Awanuiārangi welcome new CEO

Professor Wiremu Doherty takes up the position of the new Acting CEO at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, the position left by former CEO, Professor Graham Smith.

The tertiary institute continues to push forward regardless of past scrutiny concerning mismanagement of funds.

The welcome for new acting CEO of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi was blessed with a down pour of rain.

Professor Wiremu Doherty says, “Our ancestors Hinepūkohurangi and Hinewai came down, it's a sign of the significance of this day.”

Earlier this year after an inquiry, Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi was cleared of any mismanagement of funds which saw them repay $5.9 million to the Tertiary Education Commission.

Doherty says, “We addressed the issue and why it happened and to ensure it doesn't happen again. It's clear now how it became an issue and now we can move forward.”

As the new CEO, Professor Wiremu Doherty says that the wānanga is committed to winning back the support of the students and stakeholders.

“The aim of the wānanga is to continue to find pathways to lift Māori achievement within our sector.”

This Thursday Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi will celebrate the graduation of their students.
