Charter school principal named NEXT Magazine's Woman of the Year

Sita Selupe, a visionary teacher, CEO, school principal, community leader and mother of four was named NEXT Magazine's Woman of the Year last week for her inspirational work improving outcomes for Pacific and Māori children in South Auckland with the revolutionary Rise UP Academy Charter School.

Back at school with Ms Selupe, with a roll listing of 49, this Charter School is making a difference not only with the kids but with the South Auckland community.

“There's a huge need in the community for a curriculum like ours and the support that our school can give whānau.  We've got a very strong hearts and mind-based curriculum aimed at proving education outcomes for Māori and Pacific Island students,” says Ms Selupe.

Situated in the heart of Māngere, Principal of Rise UP Academy and CEO of Rise UP Trust, Ms Selupe is helping to improve the education outcomes for Māori and Pacific Island children, thus helping to break the poverty cycle.

It was in her home garage where the concept all started.

From the garage to being named Next 2014 Woman of the Year, Ms Selupe is still flabbergasted that she won the title over 30 other New Zealand women.

With this success, she encourages others to also follow suit.
