City of Sails celebrates on Waitematā

Hundreds of boats took to Auckland's Waitematā Harbour as thousands of spectators watched the Port of Auckland Regatta Anniversary Day.

There was a boat for everyone, wind-powered, motor-powered, even steam-powered - all types of boats were on display at Auckland's Princess Wharf.

Ports of Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta organiser, Zoe Hawkins says, “It’s 175 years this year since Auckland was created as a city, back in the days when there was only a few thousand people living here.  At that point, the regatta was sort of the event formed to mark the occasion.  So it's Auckland’s original birthday party.”

Over at the waterfront, people were out in full force and so was the Navy.

“Good turn-out from competitors and people out on the water, and a lot of people here to watch as well.  It's brilliant, they can take part in it!” says Hawkins.
