Day One: Ngā Manu Kōrero Nationals in Waikato

'Should the Māori language be part of Te Matatini's aggregate section?' and 'Māori; Globally Hot, Locally Not' are some of the topics for senior competitors at the Ngā Manu Kōrero National Secondary School Speech Contest which kicked off at Mystery Creek today.

Kaharau Keogh again laid the challenge at the Ngā Manu Kōrero speech competitions today.

He's returned to defend his Pei Te Hurinui title, and the standard of competition this year is as tough as ever.

Over at the Senior Māori English section, Korimako, is Ngā Wai Hono i te Pō.

We also spoke to a past winner, Te Ingo Ngaia, who has returned this year as a judge.

Tomorrow the Sir Turi Carroll and Rāwhiti Ihaka sections will get underway, and we'll also find out who this year's Ngā Manu Kōrero winners are.
