Diabetes Awareness Week

Today’s event held in Māngere highlighted the effects of eating too much of the wrong foods and drinking too much soft drinks and other bad habits which contribute to the high rates of Māori and Pacific Islanders with diabetes.

Ropata Martin of Ngāpuhi says, “Today is about educating our community on the effects of smoking and diabetes.”

Ngāti Paoa descendent, Te Aomārama Wirihana believes, “We need to look carefully at what we eat, and eating enough to ensure our wellbeing.”

More than 225,000 Kiwis are living with diabetes and 50 more people are diagnosed every day, this was the message being promoted in Māngere today.

While the Māngere community has taken this step towards a healthier and longer life for themselves, hopefully the message will be heard throughout NZ.
