Fiji assesses Cyclone Evans damage

Category 4 Cyclone Evan ripped through Fiji for most of the day and night yesterday. Over 2000 people fled their homes in Lautoka to seek shelter last night. In the morning, some houses in the village of Wailotua were completely submerged in water and there is still doubt for Kings Road in the western division of Fiji.

The eye of the storm passed over the coast of Viti Levu yesterday before moving south in the early hours of the morning, so for now, the weather at least has subsided. Relief worker Elizabeth Powell says that due to people in Fiji being totally prepared there weren’t many accidents and it was also a great relief there were no fatalities when Evan tore a path of destruction through the Island, and while the storm may have passed the after affects and full extent of the damage is not yet known.
