Six fire trucks have been called to the Silverstream landfill site in the Hutt Valley, north of Wellington, after a large fire broke out earlier this morning.
It's estimated that the fire had stretched out to up to 30 metres by 40 metres.
Four rural fire engines and two fire services crews are in attendance.
