Five Māori named in Blacksticks Commonwealth Games squad

Five Māori were selected in the NZ Women's hockey team heading across to the Commonwealth Games next month.

Rhiannon Dennison from Tainui & Jordan Grant from Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Gemma Flynn, Katie Glynn and the experienced Kayla Sharland were the talented players named in today's team announcement.

Rhiannon Dennison has gone from strength to strength this year, playing at the hockey world cup and now heading off to the Commonwealth Games.

Kayla has been playing ten plus years for the Black Sticks and this will be her third Commonwealth campaign and while she's happy with their silver medal in Dehli four years ago they are chasing the gold this time round.

Despite the disappointing 5th finish at the world cup, Dennison is just as confident as her captain that they'll have the goods to get gold.

If they can play as smart as they look in their NZ uniform, it will be gold not silver to complement their look.
