Former Black Fern to play for Bologna in Italy

Former Black Fern Amy Williams will play her 50th first-class women's rugby game this weekend before she heads out to fulfill a 10-month professional rugby contract with Bologna Rugby Club in Italy.

First-five Amy Williams will be donning her team colours for the 50th time this weekend.

"My coach is picking me 50 times over the 12 years, so it's quite exciting," says Williams.

Head coach Tom Blake says, "It's a huge achievement, in terms of women's rugby throughout the country, I don't think many people get that opportunity and for her to achieve it is absolutely huge."

When her team goes up against a tough Canterbury side in Napier, it will also be her last game for the Tuis.

"I'm off to Bologna, it's a place in Italy, for 10-month contract, so straight after this, I head off on a plane on Sunday," Williams says.

As a former Black Fern and Aotearoa Māori Sevens player, she'll be leaving a big gap in her Tuis side.

Tui captain Laurae Black says, "Her skills and experience just shows on the field and she's so knowledgeable and she's that type of player to share it with everyone."

"She's done a really good job for herself in New Zealand and now it's done benefits with a contract overseas," says Coach Blake.

The 28-year-old has been playing rugby since she was four years old and is looking forward to this new opportunity in her career.
