Fresh Māori faces look forward to NZ Fashion Week

Today marks day one of New Zealand Fashion Week 2015, and this year Indigenous Fashion Board Miromoda, who foster indigenous designers, will feature 13 Māori designers.

It's lights, cameras, action.

17-year-old Aaliyah Jobe of Ngāti Maniapoto and Ngāpuhi will feature in this year's NZ Fashion Week event.  She says, "I want them to be impressed, that you know I'm 17 and I can design clothes, that anyone can do this if they want."

Ngāi Tahu descendant Kristy Bedi will also debut at Miromoda's show, her designs incorporate kōwhaiwhai.

"My work was really kaupapa-driven that I wanted to create clothes that embodied whakapapa in a wearable way that could stay true to that whakaaro," she says.

Ngāti Kahungunu's Hohepa Thomas is no stranger to fashion week.  Known for his label, Hori, he's featured 4 other times with some controversial designs.  His new collection involves dying his clothes in a hāngi pit.

"You can smell it still, we cook it and then we dig holes in the garden and we bury it and we bring up the fabric and we cut it all out and make it into clothing," he says.

Miromoda's show kicks off on Thursday at Auckland's ANZ Viaduct Centre.
