Fresh start for domestic violence victims

A refuge long devoted to provide shelter and care for women victims of domestic violence, regardless of who they are or where they are from.

However over the past six years, Te Whakaruruhau in Hamilton has also been working with men.

A project that isn't seen at any other refuge, the women’s refuge is working closely with male prison Te Ao Mārama, the Māori Focus Unit at Waikēria Prison.

Work parties from the unit do practical work, such as repairs to refuge clients' homes which have been wrecked by domestic violence.

Numia Pōnika-Rangi has this week's feature story.
