Gallery: Gallipoli - The Scale of our war exhibition opens

The ground breaking exhibition. 'Gallipoli:The Scale of our war' at Te Papa Tongarewa was blessed this morning and a soldier, Private Rikihana Carkeek, who fought there with the Māori contingent in WW1 was honoured.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Its a proud day for the family of Rikihana Carkeek, a soldier who fought at the Chunuk Bair battle.

Mickey Orima Carkeek says, “he used to lead the Anzac day parades and all of us kids used to run along beside him and I used to call him poker back like he was saluting something.”

Kahanui Carkeek says, “it was pretty cool like I haven’t really seen anything like that before, like Giant, a bit surreal, it was pretty cool seeing the machine gun, cant imagine carrying that around.”

Mickey's son Kahanui is enlisted in the NZ Army, and he is lucky enough to be able to wear his Great Grandfathers medals with pride.
