Golden Globes' black-out takes stand against industry injustices

Kicking off award season for 2018, the 75th Golden Globes* was "blacked-out" as a powerful stand from Hollywood's A-listers against injustices in the entertainment industry.

The wear-black protest was first suggested and backed vocally by many of the awards' nominees in early December 2017.

A number of abuse allegations surfaced in the last quarter of 2017 against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, as well as other men in positions of power.

Host Seth Meyers kicked off the night with jokes directed at Weinstein and co, addressing the "elephant not in the room". Many of the award winners utilised their moment of thanks speaking about the importance of breaking the silence surrounding abuse in the industry including the first winner of the night, actress Nicole Kidman.

While the motion picture "The Shape of Water" was nominated for numerous awards, Big Little Lies and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri dominated in their categories

Television mogul Oprah Winfrey was also awarded the Cecil B. de Mille Award, an honour given each year to someone who has made an incredible impact on the world of entertainment. Her acceptance speech had the whole room standing in ovation as she spoke about people telling their truths.

Oprah Winfrey Accepts the Cecil B. de Mille Award - Golden Globes 2018

"I want all of the girls watching here now to know, that a new day is on the horizon. And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say, 'me too' again."
