Hīkoi to raise awareness of sexual violence set to begin

Labour MP Kelvin Davis, along with Activist Group Men Against Sexual Violence (Massive) will lead a 400km hīkoi that will go for 17 days in total.

Kelvin Davis says, “Our group's name is Men Against Sexual Violence and we're encouraging all men to speak out about this evil lurking within our communities which is the violence towards men, women and children. We don't want it swept under the carpet, let's protect our families.”

Other MPs such as Marama Fox, Sue Moroney, Tracey Martin, Peter Dunne and David Seymour will also take part.

Marama Fox says, “We, the Māori Party, support the call for men and women to speak out and address their concerns about stopping the violence against people and children.”

The hīkoi will start from Waitakere Trusts Stadium in West Auckland and end in the top of the North Island.  They will also visit several schools along the way.

It is a group of about 10 people who will walk 25km a day and will be tying a purple ribbon for every incident of sexual violence that occurs during the hīkoi.

It is hoped that a total of $5000 will be made. That money will go towards He Korowai Tumanako, an organisation that works to prevent sexual violence.

The march will kick off at 8am this morning.
