Inmates vege garden flourishes at Paremoremo

Prisoners at Paremoremo near Auckland are benefiting from vegetable garden flourishing at the prison. The produce is shared with community groups in the area.

Horticulturist Bill Bean says, “The vegetables we grow go to outlets, Salvation Army and Woman’s Refuge. So we’re giving back something to the community here and they feel proud that they’re doing that.”

Inmates have the opportunity to take horticulture unit standards up to level 4.

Work Place Assessor for Primary ITO, Don Gillanders says, “In the last 18 months we’ve produced about 15 certificates in level 1 and about 7 in level 2 and 3 in level 3. One prisoner training for level 4 certificate in nursery production.”
