Inspirational health initiatives showcased at annual Toi Tangata conference

Everybody knows that physical activity and good nutrition is the formula to good health, but Māori health professionals at the annual Toi Tangata conference held at Orakei Marae are also drawing on traditional Maori cuisine and theology to formulate their programmes.

Darrio Penetito-Hēmara delivers "He Pī Ka Rere", a Māori movement and skills development programme for 0-6 years with He Oranga Poutama Auckland and he put the other Māori health professional through a session this morning.

Ngāti Porou's Harley Thompson is a walking billboard for making positive changes in life, competing in the last 3 Iron Maori. He was one of the guest speakers today explaining the challenges and the mind-sets of a heavier chap.

While Harley is reaping the rewards of his lifestyle change, Darrio is also seeing the benefits of "He Pī Ka Rere" running in Māori early childhood centres throughout the Auckland region.
