Investigation underway following death at Manukau Police Station

Counties Manukau Police are currently investigating the death of a man this morning in the Manukau Police Station Custody Unit.

The 64-year-old man was arrested at approximately 8:00pm on Monday and spent the night in custody. He was routinely checked throughout the night, but on a subsequent check at 5:40am he was found unresponsive.

Police staff immediately performed CPR on the man and an ambulance was called.  However the man was pronounced deceased once paramedic's arrived.

Counties Manukau Police District Commander Superintendent John Tims says, "This incident is a tragedy and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family."

"We are doing everything we can to support the family at this difficult time. The man's name will not be released at this stage,” says Mr Tims.

Police are awaiting results of a post mortem examination before the cause of death can be established.

The incident has been referred to the IPCA.
