Ngāti Kahungunu kuia celebrates 103rd birthday

Today, Mrs Tangiora Akuhata celebrated her 103rd birthday at her retirement home, and Te Käea's cameras were there.

This special lady has reached 103 years of age, and on this auspicious day she is still very much alive and well.

It's said that the secret to Akuhata's long life is that she was never afraid of a hard day's work.

Her mokopuna Jeremy McLeod says, “it all comes down to her being such a hard worker. That's why she's still here with us and we're very lucky to have her.”

This window to ancient times grew up in Waimārama and she continues to live peacefully in her home region.

Mr McLeod says, “she's been here in Ngāti Kahungunu for many years, so it's a privilege for us to come here and be with her as she celebrates this significant milestone.”

On such a joyous day, it was joy and laughter that beamed from this special link to ancient times.
