Kaikohe man in critical condition following assault

A Kaikohe man is in a critical condition in Auckland hospital after a serious assault on Friday.

The 58 year old was airlifted to Auckland hospital suffering massive trauma to the brain which required the removal of part of his skull to relieve pressure.

Police say a 51 year old man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

According to Detective Senior Sergeant Rhys Johnston, the investigation and interviews are still ongoing and police have received two video recordings of the incident taken by two members of the victim’s family..

“The events are all captured clearly; it’s fair to say that these recordings provide excellent evidence and have assisted us greatly in this inquiry."

Police have asked for anyone who may have further information to contact them.
