Kelston come out on top in NZRL secondary schools final

Manurewa High School captain Erin Clark (Ngāpuhi) has been awarded the Player of this week’s NZRL National Secondary Schools Tournament.  His side faced a tough schedule with games against both the top two seeds of the competition.

Despite a strong effort, it was the two top teams who eventually went on to meet in the final this afternoon.

Kelston are the current national champs, they also picked up the regional title a month ago and they looked ominous from the beginning.

Kelston continued with their fast play, spreading the ball out wide resulting in two more tries.

While St Paul's have dominated this tournament, winning 15 titles over 20 years, they couldn't get any ascendancy.

Kelston grabbed another try just before half-time to extend their lead to 20-0, it was also the third to Junior Pauga.

It was a scoreless first half of the second spell until St Paul got their roll on and their first try.

St Paul's did manage to cross the line once more in the final minutes but the trophy was firmed in the hands of the reigning champs.  Final score: 20-10.

Junior was also named as the Player of the Match with his trifecta.  However, it was a team effort, which resulted in a win for Kelston.
