Key claims Government is focused on alleviating housing crisis

Splattered eggs are what John Key left with following an official opening of a new state house.

The Prime Minister says it was a Mana Party group who were just protesting for the sake of it.

According to Hone Harawira, “That’s a sign of ignorance. He doesn’t know who those children are or their families are.”

One problem that can't be debated is a mother of 10 children living in a state house with just three bedrooms.

John Key says the Government is focused on building more homes, but Labour says these recently opened homes in Maraenui only have two bedrooms and won't solve problems for families like this one.

Recently, state housing operations moved under the Ministry of Social Development (MSD). Its minister, Paula Bennett, says many of those seeking houses are already under MSD. However, others are concerned the move means MSD will have a lot of power over those families.

Another protest is being planned to take place shortly. The hope though is that communication will be the food of chiefs, rather than more eggs.
