King secures spot in New York tournament

New Zealand’s top Squash player, Joelle King, has secured a place in round three of the J.P Morgan Squash Tournament of Champions in New York following her win against Egypt’s, Zeina Mickawy.

King used her experience to outsmart Mickawy, however, the Egyptian didn’t give up without a fight.

King says the two didn’t come through the junior grades together as there is quite an age gap between both of them.

“I haven't played her before and to be honest, I haven't seen much of her."

The 20-year-old bounced back after losing the first to record victory in the second game 11-9 by reeling of a succession of winners to come from behind and level the match.

"These Egyptians are so dangerous and when you don't know their game, it is even more scary.”

King carried her momentum into the fourth game by winning the first five points, before Mickawy fought back leaving King in a one-point lead by the end of the fourth game.

"To come out strong in the fourth was good and to get a day off tomorrow," says King.

King now faces Malaysian squash legend Nicol David in the next round.
