Labour MPs elated by Māori and Pasifika support

According to Labour's newest Pasifika MP, Jenny Salesa, Labour will need to build its network of volunteers for grassroots campaigning right across the country if they're going to gain the votes needed to win in the next election.

Salesa gained 60% of the party vote in her electorate of Manukau East.

Su'a William Sio also won the Māngere electorate for his third term with Labour and believes that despite Labour not pulling in the necessary votes to win, the Māori and Pasifika support was better than good.

Jenny Salesa is about to jump on a plane for Wellington, having done the hard yards campaigning in her electorate of Manukau East.

Tomorrow, she'll be meeting with the new Labour caucus, and she'll be delivering a strong message.

Māngere's returning MP, Su'a William Sio, who's now in his third term, is singing a similar tune to that of his Pasifika colleague.

They are both elated at the support they and their fellow Māori MPs rallied in this recent campaign and say if this unified approach can be carried over into Labour's general campaign strategy, it could make a strong impact next time around.

So despite Labour losing the main race in this election, there's a slow but sure rumbling from within Labour's Māori and Pasifika caucus that will see them come back stronger in 2017.
