Last minute dash for liquor store owners

While Auckland is on the cusp of changes to the way alcohol is sold and supplied in the region, the Waipiro Harm Action Group says it seems liquor store owners are rushing to get their applications processed before the change.

An example is the license granted to Thirsty Liquor to open a bottle store directly across the road from Southern Cross Campus in Māngere.

A rally in place will offer a platform for people wanting to know more about Auckland Council's draft Local Alcohol Policy (LAP).

There are many parts to the proposed policy, but overall it aims to reduce alcohol-related harm and make Auckland a safer place.

Organisers of the rally say, by getting people to sign a petition demanding fewer liquor stores and prompting them to also make a submission to the LAP the community will be a safer place.

There's one month left to have a say on the Auckland Council's draft Local Alcohol Policy with submissions due by July 16.
