MANA Movement names Tāmaki candidate

Tūnuiarangi McLean of the Māori Party, Peeni Henare of the Labour Party, and Marama Davidson of the Greens are all contesting the same electorate as Kereama Pene.

An apostle within the Rātana Church and a descendant of Ngāti Whātua ki Ōrākei, Pene is the only Tāmaki Makaurau candidate to have stood in the Tāmaki electorate in a previous election.

Although Pene gained less than 3000 votes last election, it's likely he did close the margin between high profile candidates, Labour's Shane Jones and Pita Sharples of the Māori Party in 2011.

However, this Māori political commentator says it's a whole new playing field this time around as all the candidates standing in the electorate, apart from Pene, are newcomers with very different profiles.

It was only recently that the executive of the MANA Movement decided to put up Kereama Pene as a candidate.

Before the announcement, MANA were only vying for the party vote in Tāmaki Makaurau.
