Mana Wāhine celebrated in Manurewa

To acknowledge and celebrate the mana of women, a gathering was held at Manurewa Marae run by the various marae services, under the heading "Mana Wahine Day".

Some say mana wāhine today is not the same concept as the pre-european one.

According to Marama Davidson, “The concept of mana wāhine for Māori is different to the way it relates to European women, it's about honour and prestige of family, and our people, these things have been oppressed since the arrival of Pākehā.”

Puawaitanga Matene says, “I perceive mana wāhine to be relating to the position and strength of women, a girl, a mother, an aunty, a nanny, they are the caretakers of the family.”

Today’s Mana Wāhine Day is an opportunity to bring together women, men and children from the Manurewa Community which also provides services including health, well-being and mixing with the youth.
