A collective of six iwi of a historical Papakura pā site and the Papakura local board have finally signed a management plan to protect the pā site.
This comes after years of local government trying to turn the scared site into a public picnic area.
Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, Ngāti Paoa, Ngāti Tamaoho, Ngāti Te Ata, Ngāti Whanaunga and Te Akitai Waiohua are all leading the charge to take back their ancestral land, and they are starting by correcting the name.
The Govt wanted to turn this sacred place into a public picnic area and build a walkway along here, but David Wilson-Takanini says it will damage the cultural value of the site.
A collective of iwi has finally gained approval to place one of their most sacred pä sites under the 1977 Reserves Act. Ted Ngataki says he would like to see the site restored.
However, David says there's still a long way to go.
