Māngere HNZ office refurbishment comes at what cost?

A housing advocate in South Auckland is warning of overcrowding as the Government puts the brakes on plans for state house expansions.

Housing New Zealand has dumped the "Right Size" plan which would have seen 3000 new bedrooms added at a cost of $260 million.

It'll cost $300,000 to refurbish the Māngere Housing New Zealand offices.

However there's no more money for extensions to state houses throughout the region.

Just down the road at the local food bank service, Jacky Kingi knows too well what it's like to live in overcrowded conditions.

Georgina Nathan helped her get into her five bedroom state house and says the number of South Auckland families living in overcrowded conditions could rise with the scrapping of the "Right Size" plan.

So the decision by the Government has been made, with no turning back, but it could be a rough ride ahead for many vulnerable families.
