Māori-French cultural exchange to celebrate te reo Māori

Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori will be hosting a delegation of French speakers for the "final word of the week" - Wīwī, meaning French or France, to recognise the successful "Māori Word of the Week" campaign that ran since the beginning of Māori Language Week 2014.

The campaign introduced 50 Māori words over 50 weeks, and the final word "Wīwī" will end this in preparation for the 2015 Māori Language Week which begins on July 27.

This week, Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori will host a cultural exchange with members of the French-speaking community in Wellington and French Embassy staff in attendance, where they will celebrate the use of the word "Wīwī", and reflect on matters concerning language revitalisation.

As the successful "Kupu o te Wiki" campaign comes to an end, the 2015 campaign will introduce "Te Rerenga Kōrero o te Wiki", where 50 phrases will be shared over 50 weeks.

The cultural exchange will take place this Friday at Wharewaka.
