Mataatua Kapa Haka Regionals 2016 - Tauira Mai Tawhiti

Established in 2005, Tauria Mai Tawhiti is made up of a number members with links to Te Whānau-ā-Apanui iwi.

Tauira Mai Tawhiti dedicated their Waiata Tira to two Tūhoe women who passed away recently; prominent kuia Te Uruhina McGarvey and Mereana Black. Their Whakaeke was also dedicated to well-respected Tūhoe leader Tiwi Black.

Kaitataki tāne Cy Mcleod, who is also a tā moko artist, composed the poi “Niwareka” and haka “Mataora” which both explore and embrace aspects of traditional tā moko.

Tauira Mai Tawhiti ended their bracket with a heart felt whakawātea paying homage to the late Te Rerewa Koopu.

Tauira Mai Tawhiti was lead on stage by kaitātaki tāne Cy Mcleod and kaitātaki wahine Erena Koopu.

The group was taught by multiple tutors including leaders Cy Mcleod and Erana Koopu as well as Tina Black, Erueti Korewha, Haimona Waititi and Georgina Williams.

The item the rōpū has chosen to share is their poi.
