Mechkov crowned 'King in the Ring'

Last night at the ASB stadium in Auckland, eight of the most impressive super middle weight kickboxing athletes battled it out in the hope of making history to become New Zealand’s first ever 75kg King in the Ring champion.

During Sky TV commentator, Monty Betham’s post-fight interview, Victor Mechkov was quick to acknowledge head coach Jason Suttie, for his guidance and wisdom to keep going in the final, “Definitely the help and the mental push he gives me is just phenomenal. I fell I have a brick wall behind me and I know, no one can stop us, I am very grateful.”

The former World Kickboxing Federation super middleweight champion Mechkov of Elite Thai Kickboxing HQ edged out Hayden ‘Tat North’ Todd of Strikeforce to win by a split decision which earned him $10,000 in prize money.

The newly crowned champion Victor Mechkov says, “Hayden is a very tough opponent, this is the second time we have fought each other. He gave it all, I gave it all, and that was tough, really tough I am exhausted.”

Mechkov, a lawyer by profession, found himself on a tough road to victory. In his first fight he won by unanimous decision, beating Mikaera ‘Shotgun’ Povey.

In his semi-final, Mechkov won by a majority decision defeating the former Commonwealth champion Mike ‘Blood Diamond’ Tambo.
