Midget Men and Women W6 Waka Ama teams battle it out at Karāpiro

It's day two at the Waka Ama Nationals at Karāpiro where we saw the first finals of the tournament in the midgets and intermediate age groups.

The Midget men and women in the W6 250m finals took place this morning.

Mareikura were too strong and won the midget girls section. In the boys section it were the boys from Ōtaki that hung in there for the win. A feat their club Te Rau o Te Rangi ki Ōtaki is very proud of.

It's their first Nationals and their first gold.

It's also only the second gold for their club Te Rau o Te Rangi ki Ōtaki at the Nationals.

Ōtaki is one of 61 clubs throughout the country and abroad that are competing this week. Last year they only brought 6 paddlers but this year it has ballooned to 120.

Training back in Ōtaki hasn't been without struggles though.

That commitment and effort has already paid off with their midget boys' team winning the final today.

Ōtaki will hope to continue their winning start to 2015 throughout the rest of the week.

The midgets have now completed all their races. The intermediate section will continue tomorrow and the  J16 section will start. It is going to be yet another full on day at Karāpiro.
