Midwives are calling for urgent action from the government at marches around the country today.
At the march in Wellington, a petition with more than 13,000 signatures is being presented to parliament.

Recent calculations show the average wage for rural lead maternity carers and midwives is only around $7 an hour after tax and expenses.
