More progress is needed for compliance

An audit by global service provider, PricewaterhouseCoopers has found that wider Auckland Council groups are making slow progress in meeting legislated requirements relating to Māori and Independent Māori Statutory Board chairman David Taipari says this is "unsatisfactory".

The audit assessed the wider council’s performance in complying with its Treaty of Waitangi obligations and found that few of the 42 audited recommendations have been completed.

“If we, the Board, were to be satisfied with the current rate of progress, it would take nearly 40 years to address the outstanding recommendations and that’s simply not good enough,” said Mr Taipari.

“There’s high awareness of obligations, however it is timely progress that’s required in order to reach a place of compliance.”
