MWWL welcomes new GM

The Māori Women's Welfare League (MWWL) welcomed its new General Manager today, Hinemoa Awatere. Of Ngāti Porou and Te Arawa descent, she's a former advisor at the Māori Language Commission.

A new General Manager and a new direction for the Māori Women's Welfare League.

The league has 3000 members comprising 140 branches.  However, according to its president, they need to be more vocal, which is one of their biggest challenges.

Prue Kapua says, "I think we've sat under the radar for a very long time the women that are working day in, day out, most people don't know what they're doing."

Kapua says promoting their work and being more proactive on national issues are weaknesses they're looking to address.

One of the problems they've identified is government contracts.  The league says they should be more aligned to community needs rather than government department targets.

The MWWL annual conference will be held in October at Whangarei.
