Native Affairs - The Claim

By Renee Kahukura-Iosefa

Just last month Taranaki Iwi Te Atiawa signed a deed of settlement with the Crown worth 91 million dollars.

However a decision by Te Atiawa Iwi authority to cash in on the historically significant whenua known as the Pekapeka block in Waitara instead of finally seeing the land returned has tested relationships within the tribe.

Some hapū representatives say the return of land, confiscated over 150-years-ago, has always been the core focus of their settlement.

But the tribal authority says it’s about getting the best deal for all Iwi members.
