Native Affairs - Key addresses concerned Kaikōura business owners

Prime Minister John Key has today addressed local Kaikōura business owners about the government response to the earthquakes which have decimated the region’s infrastructure.

Business owners flocked to Whale Watch this afternoon with their concerns around the current infrastructure and impact of road closures on their livelihoods, especially in the tourism sector.

Key says the government plans to make a number of law changes next week which they claim will fast track help for the quake-stricken regions.

Road repairs are being given top priority according to the prime minister.

An increase in the capacity and number of flights in and out of Kaikōura was also discussed, with the prime minister suggesting discounted flights are a possible option.

Local business owners discussed more specific concerns affecting their businesses.  For example, dredging is urgently needed for boat operators like Whale Watch.

Key says the government will be looking into packages for farmers and fishing operations similar to the one recently signed-off by MPI for pāua recovery.
