Native Affairs - The Price of Fish Part 1

Native Affairs kicks of its first episode of 2014 with a special investigation into fish.

Māori and pākeha alike regard kaimoana as a gift from Tangaroa, and so they should.

At up to forty dollars a kilo - a feed of fish is becoming increasingly beyond the means of many whānau, and it's not going to get any cheaper because our fisheries are under pressure.

In fact, recreational fishermen in the upper North Island have had their daily snapper limit reduced from 9 fish to 7 in a bid to preserve the Snapper one Fishery.

Recently Native Affairs was approached by one of these keen fishermen who alleged large amounts of fresh whole fish were being dumped.

We decided to investigate and the results are fascinating.

This is part one of our two part special by Reporter Billie Jo Hohepa-Ropiha and Producer Richard Langston.
