Native Affairs - A wild Kiwi encounter

A Stewart Island Māori trust has just launched its new business venture, getting up close and personal with Kiwis.

The Rakiura Maori Lands Trust and Real Journeys have partnered to launch Wild Kiwi Encounter on Stewart Island. They brought the business from well-known Kiwi guide Phillip Smith who has retired but will continue to advise the company.

Smith says "There is nothing compared to seeing a Kiwi in the wild. I don't think people realise just how special it is to see them in their natural environment because they are totally different”.

The Chairman of Rakiura Maori Lands Trust Simon Gomez says "As kaitiaki (guardians) of the Kiwi, they will continue to uphold the legacy Phillip Smith began 26 years ago. The new business will provide opportunities for the next generation to become involved and learn from the knowledge and experience of people like Phillip Smith”.
