New Zealand Universities make their mark in QS World University Rankings

New Zealand Universities have made their mark in the latest report on QS World University Rankings by subject.

According to the rankings released today, the results are based on extensive research and the expert opinion of over 85 thousand Academics and over 41 thousand employers, New Zealand Universities make the global top 400 in at least one discipline.

Otago University is ranked 8th in the world in the field of Dentistry, Massey University is 15th in the world for Veterinary Science and the University of Auckland comes 23rd globally for Development Studies.

According to the research, of the 36 subjects ranked in the study, New Zealand Universities received 130 placements

QS Head of Research, Ben Sowter says, “These rankings provide the most comprehensive global comparison of universities yet at individual subject level. The world-class performance of the New Zealand institutions reflects their high-impact research and outstanding reputation among an industry-leading sample of global academic experts and graduate employers.”

According to the report, The University of Auckland ranks top nationally in 31 subjects, Otago University leads locally in four disciplines, The University of Victoria in Wellington and Massey University in two and The University of Waikato in one discipline.

Mr Sowter says, "While the dominant players remain the US and the UK, our ranking shows that academic excellence is widely distributed around the globe. The 894 universities ranked in at least one subject are based in 60 different countries. The 200 universities we list for business, for example, are in 32 nations, and the 400 we rank for medicine in 47."
