Newcomers Hukanui lead Waicoa League Competition

There's a new team leading the premier grade of the Waicoa League competition.

Hukanui now lead the competition, but they won't be happy with their efforts against a redeveloping Tūrangawaewae side, despite winning 38-16.

Hukanui started off well, with Reihana Tairakena crossing the line to score.

Tūrangawaewae came back just minutes later, with hooker, James Maru, scoring the home side's first try.

But it wasn't long until Hukanui hit back, through Dennis Potae showing skill as he scored under the posts.

It didn't end there for Hukanui, they scored another two tries before the break thanks to Hohepa Monk.

Half-time score: 22-4.

The second half started badly for both teams, with silly errors on both sides.

Tūrangawaewae scored the first try in the second half when Eugene Davis crossed the line for the second time in the match.

Hukanui had two players sin-binned; Robbie Edmonds was the first to be sent off.

Although they were a player down, they still managed another try.

Despite both teams scoring one try each in the final minutes, Hukanui came away with the 38-16 win.
