Northland schools to be visited by MASSIVE hikoi contingent

Green Bay College, Whangarei Girls High School and Bay of Islands College are among the schools that will be visited by the MASSIVE hikoi contingent and supporters as they continue their journey to the tip of the North Island.

Labour MP Kelvin Davis who is leading the hikoi told Te Kāea, “Our group's name is Men Against Sexual Violence and we're encouraging all men to speak out about this evil lurking within our communities which is the violence towards men, women and children. We don't want it swept under the carpet, let's protect our families.”

The 400km hīkoi started at Waitakere Trusts Stadium in West Auckland and will end in the top of the North Island.

The group plans to walk at least 25km a day and will be tying purple ribbons for every incident of sexual violence that occurs during the hīkoi.

Kelvin Davis says the team is around 30 kilometres from Whangarei and has received a lot of support on the journey so far.

He says the weather hasn’t hampered their efforts and while they received one day of heavy rain, the overcast weather has been welcomed by the team.

On Sunday a community meeting on the importance of standing up for victims of sexual violence will be held in Kaikohe.

Davis says other politicians and supporters plan to join the contingent along the way and it is hoped that a total of $5000 will be raised to go towards He Korowai Tumanako, an organisation that works to prevent sexual violence.
