NZ Men's elite Waka Ama team prepping for World Elite Sprint Championship

The NZ men's elite Waka Ama team has just three months to prepare for the worlds in Australia in May. Our top 13 paddlers have been selected to represent the country in the new World Elite Sprint Championship.

Te Kāea reporter, Rewa Harriman went along to their first training camp in Whangarei.

Conan Herbert says, “I suppose the big challenge for us is because we are from different teams so we all paddle slightly different so opportunities like this is important to get team gelling and trying to get the technique.”

Training camps are few and far between though for the paddlers.

Kaiako, Myka Nuku says, “Some are finding it difficult, the number of trainings every day. But my response to them is if that they want a podium finish, this is what they need to do.”
